If you are a video blogger or want to learn how to get your film noticed, Blip.tv is your starting point. This company is firing on all cylinders in the social-video content arena. This service is becoming a premier competitor compared to many of the emerging video services.
The Front End:
- Publishing: You can not only upload through Blip.tv, but also FTP, and your mobile phone. This makes it too easy to capture all your Spring Break shenanigans in real time: Film, Upload & Post. It’s a simple as that. Even makes it easier, you can even upload video from Windows Media Maker, the software that comes pre-packaged with your PC. Getting your video noticed is guranteed to be $0.00.
- Community: One of the other best features of Blip.tv is the network that can be formed in sharing your video. You can actually see who’s online, create your posts and connect with other Blip users.
The Back End Features:
- Stats: You can get to see your video posts, viewers comments & the number of views on a daily basis. It also shows the number of times the video has been linked from other sites. This is very useful information to know. When your content moves & is celebrated by other bloggers/videobloggers or the sphere in general, there’s added value. What’s even better is that a “view” of the video has a set standard, which is counted through the Media Permalink (the media url).
- Cross-Posting: The best feature of the site, given the fact that Blip.tv took into account existing networks that people already may be on. Not only you can be apart of the Blip.tv network, you can also post your content from Blip.tv to your own own blog - whether it be Wordpress, Blogger, Movable Type, or Typepad blogs. This is a key feature of the site because, you don’t have to re-invent or re-invest into “another” network. Blip.tv allows for users with video to integrate their works into their existing network.
- Advertising Management: There currently three methods of advertising within your video you can use. They are Mid-Roll - which I think is extremely effective and should become the premier methods, Post-Roll, (many say its on its way out, however, this is where small companies can add on their adveritising for premium prices and) and Adjacent. Adjacent shows up during the video content in a small box, so you won’t miss the content your looking at and you won’t miss the commercial. This is definitely the best for all parties, however, to an end user, sometimes people don’t want to be bother with “additional” content getting in the way.
Monetization Features:
- Ad revenue is split 50/50 between Blip.tv & the content creator. The company vision clearly states that “all creators should be paid for their work.” For the videoblogger, hobbyist or whoever has a camera, this motivates one to make quality film & share it with the world. I think Blip.tv will be best utilizes not only for passionate users, but, who those who seek to be rewarded for their hard work.
A few net celebs that are currently using Blip.tv:
- ZeFrank has left Revver to join Blip.tv. I think the Candy was better over there.
- Amanda Congdon on her new v-blog, Starring Amanda Congdon, featuring “I think” her alter-ego, Kate.
- Lindsay Campbell dishes pop-culture delights on the stock markets with WallStrip.
- Zadi Diaz & Steve Woolf JetSets with Blip.tv
I think the only problem right now is getting enough advertisers to get placed with content providers. The number of providers are continually increasing, the question is, will there be enough advertising dollars to go round?

Thanks so much for this great post, and we are thrilled to announce today that Ze is now sponsored by Dewars..and more sponsorship announcements to come this week even. We are hoping to help prove the model that great content creators can make money doing what they love…that is the whole idea…and I think we will see more and more advertising dollars move from TV to the web as people’s habits change.. Dina (dinaATblip.tv).
Dina: Thanks for the info. That’s outstanding that Dewars has sponsored Ze. It proves that the opportunities are there and that news & media industry is not in a silo. Mainstream media might just be “new media”, where advertising dollars are spent. Why? The ultimate consumer is YOU, US, the blogosphere, the network - the people.
Yes, that is absolutely true (and I love how you phrased that.) The playing field is becoming more level, and Apple TV and new devices from Sony and Cisco will make that even more the case (i.e. as more and more great content moves from the Web to the TV set, the NBCs of the world will lose their natural advantage.) It’s a great/exciting time for people creating great content on the Web for sure.
