Company Background
Just launched yesterday, txtms is a private company based in Los Angeles, CA, specializing in information exchange and management. With txtms allows you to have a contact management system right on your mobile phone. The concept is like having the ability to share virtual business cards and managed them on your mobile phone. The social networking aspect is real-time information exchange between mobile phone users.
Overview
The problem I see so far is how I can directly link my profile information or get profile information. It seems as though you each person must have a txtms account to be able to use this service.* You can receive info by mobile phone, email or through txtms. You have to set up an account to use this service, which combines a unique userid to your profile as well as your cellphone. It is currently a free service.
The idea of sharing virtual business cards through your mobile phone is an interesting idea. Overall, I think this service will take a while to catch on. For one, I think people enjoy having regular business cards, the tangibility factor and even the “collectors’ item” frame of mind. txtms will be useful as it speeds up the idea of collecting information of a personal or business contact, however, this service will take some time to take off as people fear change.
Update
*I received word from co-founder Vram Ismailyan that only one user is required to have a Txtms account to use the service. So, in effect, you can have an account and with txtms & receive others contacts even thought they don’t have a txtms account. This makes this service more appealing now, as I can see it as a disruptive business model. It would be disruptive to printing business such as Kinko’s or business card printing companies. For example, with the improvements made to 3G on mobiles, as well as mobile phones ability to show graphics, it could be possible that your actual business card can be shown on the phone. This is what I can see as the future of this service. It would be like infared - sending a graphical image of a business card & contact information from phone to phone. If txtms can do this, this service will definitely take off.
