VISA, one of the major credit card companies is holding a contest called the Business BreakThrough Challenge. It’s a contest where Small Business can send in a 500 word essay on the challenges of their business. These challenges are typical business challenges such as Marketing, Technology, Finance, Team Building, and Organization. Judges will rate the essays and choose a winner, for a prize of a specialized consultant in the challenge area and a prize up to $10,000.

VISA is placing themselves inline w/ an ever-increasing target market – the Small Business Owner. The initial goal for VISA would be to see all Small Businesses succeed, whether they are online or offline, as every individual or business with an EIN or Social are of extreme value as a potential customer. Some competitors that Visa has in the credit card industry are American Express. I think VISA is appealing to more of the tech market and online businesses given this type of contest. American Express, on the other hand has taken a different approach. American Express has established a marketing campaign, targeting small business around the country, going directly in front of the consumer showcasing the American Express “Open” For Business Gold & Platinum Cards.

Visa is just one of the major companies jumping on the social bandwagon and targeting a market that is not only influential but that can make impact on particular industries, using technology and contests.
